Big Day For A Big Plane: A400M Takes Runway Test

The RAF's latest addition, the Airbus A400m cargo plane is undergoing runway trials at RAF Woodbridge.

Known by the Forces as Atlas, Airbus say it is the world's most versatile airlifter. It can transport a Chinook helicopter, 116 troops or over 30 tonnes of cargo. That's more than its predecessor the C130 Hercules.

It's not just the aircraft that's impressive. 23 parachute engineers spent 3 months building the runway at Woodbridge in Suffolk. It's made of clay, sand and gravel and replicates soft surface landings.

So far the RAF are in possession of 10 planes with 12 more on the way

The testing continues until the end of September after which this type of landing can be carried out on operations.
