A Biking Odyssey To Honour A Fallen Friend
A soldier based at RAF Henlow is gearing up to cycle solo across the United States.
He’ll be setting off from California and will even cross the Mojave desert on his trip.
Captain Rich Emmerson, from the Royal Dragoon Guards, will depart next month on the 3,000 mile journey in memory of a comrade who died in Afghanistan in 2011.
Squadron Leader Anthony Downing was killed when the vehicle he was travelling in was caught in a blast south of Kabul.
As he intends to get across the US in 25 days or less, he is wasting no time and training as often as possible.
He'll need to cycle at least 130 miles a day.
He'll be pedalling as quickly as possible to complete the mission in the memory of his friend and comrade.
