A Corner Of Britain With A Unique Military Past

As Armed Forces Day puts the seaside town of Cleethorpes on the map, it's important to not forget the military legacy of the whole of North East Lincolnshire.

Nicknamed "Bomber County," North East Lincolnshire's relationship with military aviation is a strong one.

The signs of this history are all around.

At a deserted field a few miles south-west of Lincoln, the remnants of a runway illustrate the location of what used to be RAF Swinderby.

And many more RAF stations in the county are still operational, like RAF Scampton.

Because the county became associated with aviation when it was still in its infancy, its also been chosen as the site for the Spire Memorial, which is still being built at the International Bomber Command Centre just outside Lincoln.

When finished, it will carry the names of the 55,573 men who died flying bomber missions during the Second World War, many of which took off from Lincolnshire.
