Historic Spitfire Commemorated In Print

The print is based on the painting ‘Birth Of The Few’ that shows the aircraft flying over Forth Bridge.

603 prints of the painting have been put on sale, a tribute to 603 City of Edinburgh Squadron who downed the German aircraft.

In October 1939, Squadron Leader Patrick Gifford shot down the Junkers 88 over the Firth of Forth near Edinburgh.

The Spitfire played a key role in World War Two.

Squadron Leader Andy Liggat, Commanding Officer of 603 Squadron, said: "We are very proud of our history.

"And it's part and parcel of what makes up the ethos of the Squadron."

The prints are being sold to raise money for Military Museum Scotland – set up by former soldier Ian Inglis to tell the story of the country’s Armed Forces from WWI up to the present day.

"All the money from the sales of the print will go to ensure the military museum stays open," Mr Inglis explained.

The painting was commissioned by aviation enthusiast, Gordon MacKerracher, who hopes the prints will make sure people "never forget" the sacrifices made in World War II.
