Horse Jumping For Joy At Royal Tournament

Squadron Leader Caitlin Wroe may be more used to leading RAF women on the ski slopes, but that hasn't stopped her training hard for a major equestrian event.

At Melton Mowbray, she's been preparing her horse Max for the culmination of the Royal Tournament event, the Derby.

The Royal Tournament three-day meeting takes its origins from the original show jumping events staged at the much loved Earls' Court Royal Tournament, the Kings and Queen's Cup.

Initially, the three equestrian events - the King's Cup, Queen's Cup, and the Derby - were set up for Army competitors but the Royal Navy and RAF have since been allowed to join in.

This year, the junior competition has attracted more than 70 riders from across the Army, Navy and RAF, all hoping they and their horses will build up their experience and help them to become future champions.

The riders are all awarded points over the course of the events, and those with the most - the top eight - will be selected to go on and compete later this year at the Olympia Horse Show, from the 13th-19th of December.
