Leap In Quality For Op Shader Accommodation

For the past 16 months RAF Akrotiri has been on the front line in the UKs war against Islamic State.

Operation Shader has also meant the arrival of hundreds of extra personnel - from pilots to engineers - putting huge pressure on the station's supply of accommodation, much of which dates from the 1950s.

This week Akrotiri unveiled three new purpose-built blocks specially designed to house servicemen and women working on Op Shader.

The walls are soundproofed to try and make sure the men and women who are working round the clock can get some sleep.

Simon Newton has been given unique access to the new buildings.
