RAF Announces Sports Awards Contenders
The RAF has announced its sports awards shortlist for 2016, with the ceremony being held at RAF Halton on the 19th of October.
As ever, the nominees reflect a wide variety of sports.
This year’s team award is between the female triathletes, who successfully defended their Inter Services Championship at South Cerney, and the male skeleton team, who won their 10th successive inter-services title.
They are also a driving force behind developing the sport for adaptive athletes.
Up for Sportswoman for the second successive year is Squadron Leader Caitlin Wroe – for the past 10 years she’s been the RAF's stand out alpine skier and has also led the way for her service in equestrian events.
In February this year, SAC Sian Williams became the first female Welsh player to sign a professional contract.
Only the second ever RAF woman to be awarded Elite sports status, she seems destined to lead the Welsh women's team at next year's World Cup.
And Cpl Kris Sumner is the RAF's stand out female table tennis player, both in singles and doubles, and this year's inter services champion.
For the men, tug of war is represented by WO Gareth Davies.
He's joined by Cpl Josh McNally, the stand out RAF Rugby Union player of his generation, who's been pivotal to the regeneration of the Light Blues over the past six years.
And in lawn tennis, Squadron Leader Chris Evans, a nine-time inter-services champion and now RAF tennis director, has been nominated.
His valuable contribution to the UK Invictus team has also been recognised.
In addition, the RAF will be honouring its top administrator and official of the year, and there will be a lifetime achievement award at the ceremony, which is being staged in RAF Halton's Sergeants Mess.
