RAF Fly in Memorial for Canadian Spitfire Pilot
The Royal Air Force have helped a project to place a memorial to a Canadian Spitfire Pilot killed during the Second World War.
The memorial stone is dedicated to Sergeant Hugh K M Thomson who piloted Spitfire P8259 of the Meteorological Flight, Coastal Command. He was killed during an aircraft accident on the 23rd February 1943 aged 28 years old.
The Royal Air Force agreed to help Mrs Janet Thomson who organised the positioning of the Stone. A Search and Rescue Sea King from D Flight, 202 Squadron airlifted it into place after being driven to the site.
Not only did the exercise help remember Sgt Thomson but also served as an effective training exercise for the Joint Aerial Delivery Test and Evaluation Unit who helped plan the complex delivery of the Stone.
