Reaper Drones to Be Used in Syria for Intelligence Gathering
It has been announced that Reaper drones will begin operations in Syria to gather intelligence on Islamic State activities.
Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said Reaper drones would be used "very shortly" alongside Rivet Joint planes.
"As well as their operations over Iraq, both Reapers and Rivet Joint surveillance aircraft will be authorised to fly surveillance missions over Syria to gather intelligence as part of our efforts to protect our national security from the terrorist threat emanating from there," he told MPs in a written statement.
"Reapers are not authorised to use weapons in Syria; that would require further permission."
Downing Street has stressed that Reapers are being used for intelligence-gathering purposes, and said the Prime Minister had made clear that he intends to return to Parliament to seek MPs' approval if he decides military action in Syria is necessary.
"We are using these assets to enhance our capability to gather intelligence and protect Britain from threats emanating from Syria," said a Number 10 spokeswoman.
