Reports: Fears RAF Training Could Be "Dumbed Down"

It's been claimed that RAF officer training could be "dumbed down" due to a shortage of fast jet pilots.

The Times newspaper reports that initial officer training looks set to be reduced from 33 weeks to 24 to speed up recruitment - something critics say may lead to a drop in standards, at a time when pilots are flying increasingly sophisticated aircraft.

The paper, which noted that the proposal is still under consideration, quoted an RAF source as saying:
“My worry is that in a few years’ time the RAF will have a generation of officers who are not adequately trained for the challenges of the world around them. It is just quite shocking."
An RAF spokesperson, meanwhile, said:
"A range of options are being considered to maximise the effectiveness of Commissioned Officer training in the Royal Air Force whilst accommodating greater course capacity and exploiting up-to-date training methods."
