Yesterday's Air Force: Memphis Belle

The B-17 Flying Fortress is an iconic aircraft of the Second World War, but one of the most famous is the Memphis Belle.

Added to the inventory of the United States Army Air Force in July 1942, it went on to fly 25 combat missions.

As the first of its kind to survive all its wartime tours, the aircraft and its crew were sent home in May 1943 to tour the US.

This year the original air frame is undergoing restoration and the US Department of Defense film unit has been catching up with progress.
