Celebrating 360 years: Military community marks Royal Marines anniversary

In honour of their 360th year of service, the Royal Marines have received messages and commemorations on social media from the Government, veterans and the public.
Founded on 28 October 1664 under King Charles II, and originally known as the Duke of York and Albany's Maritime Regiment of Foot, the corps has distinguished itself across the world and is currently deployed to 20 countries in 2024.
"Today, its elite commandos are deployed in 20 countries around the world to protect British interests, reinforce regional stability and deter our adversaries," the MOD said.
The Royal Marines wrote on social media: "Founded in 1664 during the reign of King Charles II, the corps was initially established as the Duke of York and Albany's Maritime Regiment of Foot.
"Three hundred and sixty years on, our Royal Marines remain the spearhead of vital operations as an elite amphibious fighting force."
Members of the corps marked the occasion earlier this month, with a celebratory parade taking place in Gibraltar which was famously captured by the Marines in 1704 alongside the Dutch.
In September, Royal Marines Captain Sam Edwards joined three members of the Dutch marines on a 360-mile bike from the Netherlands to Portsmouth.
Military Cross recipient, and former Royal Marines officer MP Alistair Carns wished the Corps a happy anniversary in a video message, on behalf of the Labour Party.
The sentiment was echoed by Luke Pollard, Armed Forces Minister in a message posted online.
Mr Pollard said: "As the MP for Stonehouse Barracks, the spiritual home of the Royal Marines, can I wish all those who serve and have served a happy 360th birthday of the corps.
"Founded in 1664, the Royal Marines were initially established as the Duke of York and Albany's Maritime Regiment of Foot."
Messages marking the anniversary were also posted on social media by the Royal Navy's Type 45 Destroyer HMS Duncan, RAF veteran and author Liz McConaghy, MP Andrew Pakes, and many others.
The Forces Employment Charity said: "From us all at the Forces Employment Charity – some veterans themselves of the Royal Marines – may we wish you a happy 360th birthday."
HMS Cambria said: "Happy Birthday to our Royal Marines. Formed in 1664 during the reign of King Charles II."
