Former Royal Marine Craig Hunter will attempt to conquer the summit of Mount Everest in the hope of raising the specific amount of £8,848 for the Royal Marines Charity to support veterans.

Mr Hunter, from Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, travelled to Nepal on Sunday, where for the next two months he will acclimatise himself before undertaking the enormous challenge.

Mount Everest stands at 8,848m in height, and this is the fundraising target the former Royal Marine has set for himself.

On his JustGiving page, Mr Hunter said he will start the journey through the Khumbu Valley to the Everest Base Camp, where he will begin his adventure.

The journey will require his body to adjust to the extreme altitude and physical pressure.

Once fully adjusted, he said he would wait for suitable weather conditions before taking on the climb with the help of the local Sherpa people.

Mr Hunter said: "The support I have already received from corporate sponsors and the general public is fantastic, and I am so grateful for all of the generous donations.

"I am trying to raise as many donations as possible for the Royal Marines Charity. The charity is a central pillar of support for serving and retired marines and, in some cases, a lifeline for those struggling.

"If I can help just one comrade, my journey will be a success."

The Royal Marines Charity fundraising manager, Vicki Drinkwater, said: "We can't thank Craig enough for choosing to raise funds for our charity.

"The expedition itself is an awesome challenge, but to be doing it in support of the whole corps family is truly inspiring.

"We're immensely grateful for the contribution it will make to the lifelong support we offer to the Royal Marines family.

"We wish Craig every success with this mammoth endeavour and will be following his progress every step of the way," she added.
