Fears Kinloss Barracks To Be Closed Due To Cuts
Efforts are underway to try and secure the future of Kinloss Barracks after fears that it could be closed as part of defence cuts.
Angus Robertson, the MP for Moray said he had heard about the closure from a source at the Ministry of Defence.
This base has faced uncertainty before. Once RAF Kinloss and home to the Nimrod – it was scrapped, just like the aircraft under the 2010 defence review. In 2012 the Army moved in.
Forres is the closest town to the base, and one which feels the economic benefits of a nearby military presence. Natually here people are concerned.
Moray Council are now setting up a task force – to deal with the impact of any potential closure. They've expressed disappointment that requests for a public consultation period have been denied.
But the Ministry of Defence insists that no decision has yet been made about the future of Kinloss Barracks – saying:
“We are looking to sell what [land] we don’t need so new homes can be built... Every penny made will be invested back into defence .... We’ve currently named 22 sites but no decisions about future ones have been taken.”
The people of Moray now face a nervous wait to hear about the future of Kinloss, and what impact the decisions of the Ministry of Defence could have on their community.
