Former Armed Forces Chiefs Voice EU Referendum Fears

Twelve former Armed Forces bosses have written an open letter backing the campaign for Britain to remain in the European Union.

Downing Street have admitted mistakenly adding the name of General Sir Michael Rose to the letter, orchestrated by Number 10 and published in the Daily Telegraph.

A spokesman has confirmed to Sky News that a mistake was made, and that the former Director of the UK's Special Forces had personally contacted Downing Street about his wish not to have his name added.

The confirmed signatories, including the likes of Sir Jock Stirrup and General Sir Mike Jackson, argue that the UK must stay in the EU in order to protect itself from the likes of Islamic State and an increasingly aggressive Russia.

"We have served around the world and in almost every conflict in which Britain has been engaged since the Second World War.

We are proud to have served our country and to have played our part in keeping Britain safe. In the forthcoming referendum, therefore, we are particularly concerned with one central question: will Britain be safer inside the EU or outside it? When we look at the world today, there seems to us only one answer.
Europe today is facing a series of grave security challenges, from instability in the Middle East and the rise of Daesh, to resurgent Russian nationalism and aggression.

Britain will have to confront these challenges whether it is inside or outside the EU. But within the EU, we are stronger.
Inside it, we can continue to collaborate closely with our European allies, just as we did when we helped to force the Iranians to the negotiating table through EU-wide sanctions, or made sure that Putin would pay a price for his aggression in Ukraine."

General Lord Dannatt was one of those who signed the letter.

The current Defence Secretary Michael Fallon is backing the Prime Minister in urging people to vote Yes in the upcoming June referendum on Britain's future in Europe. The Armed Forces Minister Penny Mordant, who serves as MP for Portsmouth, is urging voters to sever ties with Brussels.

Former Defence Secretary Liam Fox is firmly on the other side of the European debate.
