Hacking Fears Prompt Reported Trident Upgrade
Hackers working for rogue nations such as North Korea, and organisations like Daesh, have prompted an upgrade of the software that protects Britain's nuclear deterrent.
The Times is reporting that Trident's software system will be improved to ensure it is not made obsolete by cyber attacks.
BAE Systems will carry out the work for the US Navy which helps to maintain the UK's Trident missiles.
A spokesman for the US Navy's nuclear deterent programe told bloomberg.
"Cybersecurity threats are a legitimate concern."
The Ministry of Defence said.
"The deterrent remains safe and secure. We take our responsibility to maintain a credible nuclear deterrent extremely seriously."
The UK's 40 Trident missiles in service can each deliver 12 nuclear warheads and are exclusively carried by the Royal Navy's Vanguard Class submarine fleet.
Based at Faslane in Scotland, the four boats deploy in rotation to provide a continuous nuclear deterrent for the country.
