Libyan Air Force Close Shave

A Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23 fighter aircraft has flown a bit lower than usual recently.

In May, the Libyan Air Force Facebook page posted this video of a MiG-23 flying just a few feet from the ground.

It seems as though MiG pilots like cutting it a bit fine.

Another MiG came within 60 feet of a NATO F-16 in an incident that could have ended with a disastrous mid-air collision had evasive maneuverers not been taken in the skies over Norway.

  • The Libyan Air Force has approximately 13 fighter aircraft
  • Two ageing French F1 Mirage's along with MiG-21's and four MiG-23's
  • The first MiG-23s entered service in the 1970s
  • The MiG-23 has a maximum speed of 2,445 km/h
  • A stalwart of the Cold War, 5,000 'Floggers' were built
  • Current operators include North Korea (56 aircraft), Syria (95 aircraft) and Cuba (24 aircraft)

Following the civil war the Libyan Air Force has announced plans to rapidly expand its fighting force with the addition of Rafale, Typhoon and Mirage jets. It currently has C-130H Hercules aircraft on order from the US.
