MPs Debate Case Of Royal Marine Jailed For Battlefield Murder

The circumstances surrounding a former Royal Marine’s execution of a Taliban insurgent are being debated in Westminster.

MPs are discussing Sergeant Alexander Blackman’s case, amid a campaign to overturn his murder conviction.

Blackman, of 42 Commando, is serving an eight-year jail sentence after being convicted by a court martial, which watched footage of the killing from a helmet-mounted camera.

The 2011 incident happened after a patrol base in Helmand province came under fire from two insurgents.

It comes after a Royal Navy report, published under a Freedom of Information request, said Blackman let professional standards "slip to an unacceptably low level."

The debate is being led by the Conservative MP, Richard Drax, who says the case was flawed and needs re-opening.
