No Inquest Into Moray Firth Tornado Crash

The Crown Office says there will be no fatal accident inquiry into the collision of two Tornado GR4  jets over the Moray Firth in 2012.

Three airmen were killed and a fourth seriously injured when the aircraft crashed into the sea during a training flight from RAF Lossiemouth.

The families of the victims - Flt Lt Hywel Poole, Sqn Ldr Samuel Bailey, Flt Lt Adam Sanders and Sqd Ldr Paul Evans who survived - say they're disappointed by the decision.

Local SNP MP Angus Robertson has also expressed his disappointment adding "I am totally mystified why there won't be a fatal accident inquiry. There are critical outstanding questions about Tornado safety and the delayed collision warning system.

"The MoD failed in its duty of care towards the RAF personnel involved in the Tornado collision. I believe they, their families and colleagues deserved better and a proper inquiry."

The Crown Office say that any fatal accident inquiry would only duplicate "the months of thorough work undertaken by the Military Air Accident Investigation Branch and the Military Aviation Authority in preparing the Service Inquiry".
