Anzac Day is an annual holiday in Australia and New Zealand and marks the first major battle involving troops from both countries during World War One in 1916.

The landings at Gallipoli in Turkey failed with the loss of 11,000 lives from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) and around 40,000 members of the British, French, Newfoundlanders and Indian forces.

Turkish forces lost 86,000 people and hundreds of thousands from both sides who were seriously wounded or suffering from disease or sickness had to be evacuated from the peninsula.

Anzac Day has been commemorated in London since the first anniversary when King George V attended a service at Westminster Abbey.

It commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders who've died while on duty.
