Prince Of Wales Visits Scene Of Lord Mountbatten's Murder

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have honoured those killed during one of the darkest days of the Troubles, at a special church service in Sligo.

On August 27, 1979, Lord Mountbatten, once the Viceroy of India, and said to be the favourite uncle of Prince Charles, was killed by an IRA bomb along with three others.

Just hours later, 18 soldiers were killed at Warrenpoint in the worst single attack on UK forces during the conflict, with another man dying after being caught in the crossfire.

After the service, the Prince travelled to the fishing village of Mullaghmore, where Lord Mountbatten was killed, as part of his first official visit to Ireland.

And many in the crowd waiting to greet the Royal couple had a personal connection to the events of 1979. Fiona Weir spoke to a couple who witnessed the events 35 years ago.
