Retiring In Style - Target Practice!

The US Navy has made use of a retiring warship by using it for target practice.

The decommissioned USS Thach (FFG 43) was positioned by itself in the ocean during the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2016.

It was then the unlucky object of a SINKEX, or sinking exercise, to help practice the firing of torpedoes, missiles, and big guns.

The world's largets international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans.

Participants in the exercise include the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the Republic of Korea.

26 nations, more than 40 ships and submarines, more than 200 aircraft, and 25,000 personnel have been participating in RIMPAC from June 30th and will do so until August.

RIMPAC 2016 is the 25th exercise in the series that began in 1971.
