Royal Navy Showcases Future Drones

This autumn, the Royal Navy will help test a new generation of unmanned drones at sea.

Exercise Unmanned Warrior will involve the very latest innovations which could one day be in service.

They include underwater drones, high tech reconnaissance and a hoverbike which could carry passengers.

Commander Peter Pipkin, a fleet robotics officer, explained the rationale behind the technology:
"Mine countermeasures, for example, which is quite a dangerous operation, and if we can move our people away from that danger... then that makes sense all round".
And there are plenty of other dangerous activities where one day, machine could replace man.

The hoverbike is proving to be a very versatile vehicle, and could be utilised for a number of different roles.

The benefits of these machines will be on display in full during Exercise Unmanned Warrior in the autumn.
