Russian Jets Begin Syrian Bombing Campaign

Within hours of requesting and getting permission from his parliament to use the country's forces abroad, Vladimir Putin has sanctioned Russian air-strikes in Syria.

A US official has told the Reuters news agency that the first attacks have taken place near the city of Homs and that American military chiefs were given prior notice.

The move ends speculation that Russia was about to start fighting alongside President Assad's forces in Syria.

At least 32 Russian jets, including MiG-31 interceptors and Su-30 fighters are already based near the Syrian regime's stronghold of Latakia, along with combat helicopters and 1,700 Marines.

The Mediterranean port of Tartus has also seen a big increase in Russian activity with the delivery of artillery, ammunition and anti-missile systems.

Comment: Have Cameron, Obama & Co Underestimated Putin Again?

The Kremlin says the request for "deployment of a military contingent of the Russian Federation outside the country" was made under the "universally recognised principles and norms of international law."

Speaking in New York earlier this week the Russian president said his air force would be willing to work alongside those of the US and UK in the fight against Islamic State. Although he did rule out putting 'boots on the ground'.

The last time Mr Putin went to the Federation Council with such a request it was swiftly followed by the seizing of Crimea away from Ukraine.
