Unique Piece Of Naval History Goes Under The Hammer

A unique piece of military memorabilia is set to go under the hammer at a Sevenoaks auction house this week.

Pakenham retired from active duty in 1926.
The item in question is a flag which was owned by Rear Admiral Sir W C Pakenham.

The flag saw action in a number of sea battles, including the famous naval Battle of Jutland (1916) fought during World War I.

During the battle HMS New Zealand - which bore the flag - fired 420 twelve-inch shells during the battle, more than any other ship on either side, while only being hit once in return.

In recognition of his actions, Rear Admiral Pakenham was made Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, on board HMS New Zealand, on May 31 1916.

The unique item, which has a guide price of between £400 and £600, is up for sale in a public auction at Ibbett Mosely’s auction rooms. The auctioneers say it is in a glazed and stained oak presentation case with plaque.

Alan White, Ibbett Mosely’s head auctioneer, said: “We are delighted to be auctioning this very rare item of naval memorabilia and we are expecting lots of interest.”

The sale on Wednesday October 14 takes place at the auction rooms in Argyle Road at 12.30pm.
