US Commander: "Afghan Forces Requested Kunduz Airstrike"

The commander of US and coalition forces in Afghanistan says an American airstrike that killed 22 people at a hospital in the city of Kunduz was requested by Afghan forces.

Speaking at the Pentagon, General John Campbell said the original assessment of the situation had been incorrect.

It comes as Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), which ran the hospital, calls the attack a war crime, saying it wants an independent international investigation.

The charity blames US-led NATO forces for Saturday's bombing of the hospital.

MSF said the attack, which killed 12 staff and 10 patients, amounted to a clear war crime, and says any inquiry should be independent of the US.
