US Navy Officer Accused Of Spying
American media are reporting that a US Navy officer has been accused of spying for China.

An official told Fox News that a Navy Lieutenant commander assigned to a maritime reconnaissance squadron has already been charged.

The man has been reported to be Lt. Cmdr Edward C. Lin, a naval flight officer with extensive background in signals intelligence.

Lin was born in Taiwan and later became a naturalised US citizen.

Media reports suggest that he was arrested last summer and the investigation is still ongoing.

Redacted charge sheets are reported as saying the officer gave secret information, “relating to the national defence to representatives of a foreign government.”

The sort of information provided is not specified.

It's thought he faces three counts of attempted espionage, three counts of making false official statements and five counts of communicating defence information, “to a person not entitled to receive said information.”

He's also accused of providing a false address when on leave.

The FBI and Naval Criminal Investigative Service are cooperating on the ongoing investigation with further arrests not ruled out.

If found guilty of the most severe espionage charges, the officer may face the death penalty.
