WATCH: Rick Clement Uses Exoskeleton On Path To Cenotaph

Rick Clement, one of Britain’s most seriously injured soldiers, has taken another few steps towards his goal of walking up to the Cenotaph in November.

Rick lost both his legs and suffered serious internal injuries when he stepped on a roadside bomb in Afghanistan five years ago - and now wants to be able to take a few steps so he can lay a wreath for the friends he lost whilst on tour.

The latest part of his journey involved using a 'ReWalk' exoskeletona type of motorised brace that's been used successfully on paraplegics in the past.

But although Rick was clearly impressed with the technology, he wasn't quite sure it was for him.

He told Forces TV's Victoria Smith that he found it big, heavy and cumbersome, and worried that it would prevent him from getting in and out of his car, which is crucial to him maintaining his independence.

In a post on his Facebook page, Rick wrote:

"It's quite a piece of kit. It's not designed to be used with prosthetic legs and as far as I'm aware I'm the first [double amputee] to have tried [it].

"I'm not sure its something I'll use in the short term but it does open up other options. The road to the Cenotaph continues."

The ReWalk exoskeleton comes with a power supply carried in a backpack, as well as a computer that allows the equipment to sense when he's tilting and moving.

Rick said he'd probably stick to the prosthetics he's been using for the past few months - although he may go back to the exoskeleton in future.

Watch Rick's walk to the Cenotaph in 'Rick Rebuilt: A Soldier's Journey', exlusive to Forces TV, on November 9th at 9pm - Sky channel 264, Virgin 277 or Freesat 652.
