Work On Walk Of Fame For Armed Forces Set To Begin

When Tom Cuthbertson's son Private Nathan Cuthbertson was killed in Afghanistan in 2008 his father set himself the task of creating a legacy that would stand the test of time.

Set in Sunderland's Mowbury Park he first built the Brothers in Arms Memorial Wall, honouring the city's servicemen and women who had died in conflict since the Second World War.

Now work is set to begin on the granite-slabbed Veterans' Walk engraved with the names of aircrew, sailors or soldiers who have served, or are currently serving, in the British Armed Forces.

Mr Cuthbertson, himself a former Paratrooper, told Forces TV at the time of the launch that, "there isn’t permanent recognition for people that have served, or are serving, their country."

"You get a medal from the Government, but this is a permanent reminder set in stone."

“It means people can buy their own slab, which is more meaningful. They can then show that to their children, to show them how proud they are of being in the military.”

The first batch of stones to be laid is expected to be ready next month.
