Army Reserves dominate in second-ever fixture against Maritime Reserves
The Army Reserves men’s football team have beaten the Maritime Reserves 6-0 in their second-ever Inter Reserves Service fixture in Portsmouth.
It was a storming victory for the Army and their second in a row, after they won last year's inaugural fixture in Aldershot.
Lance Corporal Patrick Conboy was the standout player after scoring a hat-trick to contribute to the Army's victory.
But it was a penalty for the Army that got them off the line in the first half, after LCpl Conboy was brought down by Able Rate Rhys Evans inside the penalty area.
Army skipper Private Craig Thomson stepped up to take the penalty, which he did so successfully to give his team the early advantage.
Having found their rhythm, the Army began to grow into the game. LCpl Conboy then shone through to score ahead of half-time.
In the second half, the Army continued their upward trajectory as the Maritime Reserves continued to search for answers.
An assist by Private Kieran Donoghue found the head of LCpl Conboy to score his second goal of the game.
But LCpl Conboy wasn't finished there, as Private Daniel McInnes created the space he needed to make a charge towards the goal and tap the ball in to score himself a hat-trick.
Further goals for the Army came from Pte McInnes and for substitute Mark Kirchmair to seal their 6-0 victory over the Maritime Reserves.
Plans are underway for this historic fixture to be transformed into a tri-services tournament, with the inclusion of the RAF Reserves, in the future.
