Marines 5-0 Paras: Royal Marines storm to Falklands Cup victory
The Royal Marines are celebrating a 5-0 win over the Parachute Regiment in their Falklands Cup showdown in Devon.
The Marines went 2-0 up in the first half, initially courtesy of a goal from Connor McAuley, who put his side ahead by dribbling from the edge of the box in the face of several defenders and striking with his right boot into the bottom left corner of the net, with the keeper off balance and leaving plenty of space to his right.
Ollie Ward then got in on the action, thanks to a deft touch off the outside of McAuley's boot, seeing his teammate make a run through the last line of Para defence, and just having to beat the keeper with a cool touch in.
The Marines continued their pressure in the second half, and it told, with arguably the goal of the game – Harry Eaton with a superb curling free kick from the edge of the box, leaving the keeper planted and outfoxed by his clean strike into the corner of the goal.
Ward then bagged his brace, as the floodgates opened. His initial shot was blocked by a defender, and then he put the second one into the bottom left corner of the net.
Kieron Feeney, in the 93rd minute, then added further pain for the Paras, a reflection of how his side maintained relentless pressure on their opposition through the evening.
The Marines' celebrations added warmth to a chilly Exmouth evening, after a resounding win in a game initially billed as a battle for bragging rights between the 'elite of the elite' Armed Forces units.
