RAF and Army inseparable after feisty Inter Services opener
The Royal Air Force and the British Army have drawn in their opening Inter Services clash at Shrewsbury Town FC.
The Army came into this game with a brand new coaching set up in the hopes that their new coach, Captain Al Brown, can lead the reds to Inter Services success once again.
The RAF enter this year’s tournament looking to put right the wrongs of last year, where they walked away empty handed after conceding the Inter Services title to the Royal Navy.
But the light blues put themselves on the right footing in the opening minutes of the game, with Mitchell Duggan assisting skipper Michael Campbell for an opportunistic goal amidst an army of red shirts inside the box.
A crucial goal for the RAF side gave the hosts the lead in the opening minutes of the match.
The Army went on the attack, but the reds racked up their number of missed opportunities in the first half.
But Ryan Fagan came through for the Army in the dying minutes of the first half with a terrific goal to level the scoreboard at half time.
The Army looked to carry their last-minute first half momentum into the second half, but a missed opportunity for Dominic Creamer saw him come inches away from giving the Army the lead for the first time in this game.
A big moment for RAF skipper Michael Campbell too who was denied a goal by the quick deflection of Army goalkeeper Luke Cairney.
A very scrappy final minutes from both teams as the final whistle drew closer, with both teams missing out on opportunities to capitalise in some crucial moments.
But as the final whistle sounded, the two teams could not be separated, and the RAF and the Army end the game with a 1-1 draw.
The result leaves the Inter Services championship wide open – as the RAF face the Royal Navy in Fratton Park in Portsmouth on 19 March.
