Royal Air Force women win fourth consecutive Inter Services title

Watch: The RAF and the Navy battle for the Inter Services title at Oswestry Town.

The Royal Air Force women have won the Inter Services Football Championships for the fourth year running after a 1-0 victory against the Royal Navy women.

A solidary goal by the RAF’s Pip Wilson was enough to clinch the Inter Services title after a hard-fought match against a well-organised Navy squad.

The stakes were high for the Royal Navy who needed to win the game against the RAF to clinch their first-ever Inter Services title after a 1-0 victory against the Army in Havant last week.

The RAF, who beat the Army 2-0 in Aldershot a fortnight ago, could win the Inter Services based on goal difference if they were to draw against the Navy.

The first half saw the RAF dominate on ball possession against a Navy side that seemed well-organised.

Missed chances for the RAF however saw them fail to break the stalemate in the first half and both sides went into half time goalless at 0-0.

Both teams returned for the second half with more urgency than the first half with the Inter Services title on the line.

But it was Pip Wilson for the RAF who broke through with a 25-yard strike to give the RAF a 1-0 lead.

The Navy now at a disadvantage needed to come up with something quickly to salvage what’s left of their game.

But a second yellow card for the Navy’s Anthea Kaptein after a hard tackle on RAF number 8 Megan Herbert resulted in a red card and the Navy a player down.

With the sound of the final whistle came a jubilant fourth consecutive Inter Services title for the RAF women after a well-fought 1-0 victory against the Navy.

The Navy showed great strength, skill and determination throughout which will one day stand them in good stead for a potential title challenge in the future.
