UKAF's late comeback wins Remembrance clash against Everton Academy

The UK Armed Forces women's football team have won their Remembrance fixture away against Everton Women's Academy.

UKAF were behind at half-time when Izzy Morris pounced on a goalkeeping mistake to score.

However, a brave comeback from Flight Sergeant Karl Milgate's team saw goals from Libby Dixon and Harriet Wellings secure victory.

The Forces team started the game well at the Widnes Stadium and could have led when Courtney Jones' thumping drive was tipped on to the crossbar by impressive young Everton goalkeeper Peyton Henderson.

Moments later, Ciara Boylan headed wide from inside the six yard box but UKAF's pressure saw Everton take the lead against the run of play.

Army goalkeeper Teri Harfield-Brown tried to play out from the back but was caught in possession, giving Morris the easiest goal of her fledgling career.

The second half saw UKAF try to force a way back into the game but it wasn't until Dixon's goal in the 77th minute that they had any joy.

Dixon, who has recently left full-time service with the Army to become a Reservist and PE teacher, spun smartly and scored from a situation that didn't look likely to result in a goal.

From there, UKAF had the impetus but the way in which they scored the winner caused some controversy.

Ellie Bishop seemed to be tasked with returning the ball back to the Everton goalkeeper in a moment of good sportsman-like behaviour but Henderson dropped the catch.

That allowed the substitute, Wellings, to take advantage and give UKAF victory in injury time.
