Western Region savour victory in Royal Navy Golf Championships

Western Region have reigned supreme in the Royal Navy Golf Championships with an impressive overall team performance at China Fleet Country Club in Cornwall.
The course in Saltash played host to individual and team strokeplay and matchplay competitions.
On the Monday, the Fleet Air Arm (FAA) won both their matches and Western Region and Royal Marines won one apiece in the matchplay round robin.
The following day, FAA convincingly beat the Royal Marines, before seeing off Western on the Wednesday.
FAA were declared Matchplay champions on four points, following a fog-induced cancellation in the final round.
One hundred and seven players from across the Navy bid for their chance to be crowned champion across four rounds of strokeplay.
The top nine from each region vied for the matchplay and team strokeplay titles.
The male golfers played from white tees, while eight female entrants took on a hybrid 'orange' course, competing at more than 6,000 yards.
Scoring in the strokeplay was tight in the men's and women's competitions. The leaders in both were merely one shot ahead of the chasing pack after three rounds.
AB Harry Noton led PO Tom Yates and LET Adam Taylor in the men's, and SET Olivia Trewhela led ETME Alex Forrest in the women's.
Yates carded 72 in the final round to win the men's competition by five shots from Noton and take the title of Royal Navy Champion with a total of 293.

Seventy-eight from both leading women helped SET Trewhela maintain her lead to defend the title she won last year (314), while a nett 67 helped Lt Cdr Lauren Hulston to victory in the nett (281) by two shots from Lt Dan Rome.
Western Region won the team strokeplay event with a total of 1,402 shots, six ahead of FAA.
In the Overall Team event, which allows players from all handicap backgrounds to be part of their team's final position, results from strokeplay, matchplay and nett (best four from six) were combined to give an overall champion. Western took the title with a score of 2,272.
The 2025 tournament takes place at Saunton Golf Club, North Devon.
