Proud Tradition: Forces Rugby Sevens Players Look To Make Mark As Season Returns

The rugby sevens season has returned and the first silverware of the summer has already been contested.

Hugely popular amongst the Armed Forces, the fast and scintillating variant of rugby union requires players with plenty of energy and skill.

It was recently in the spotlight as the women's teams made their long-overdue debut at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia.

The military has a proud history in the game, with a number of players having featured on the international circuit.

On the domestic scene, the Army competes at many of the most prestigious events in the sevens calendar.

This year's Inter-Corps competition provided current Army sevens team manager Stu Cooke with the opportunity to cast an eye over the talent in his ranks.

The final of this season's Inter-Corps competition showcased exactly the sort of athlete the Army needs, as the Infantry took on the Royal Artillery.

The Infantry exploded out of the blocks, with Siva Naulago putting them in front with a trademark try full of South Sea Islander flair.

There was more to come as Sikeli Rokovunicagi gave the Gunners' defence the slip before passing to Manueli Raloka to dash in under the posts.

One of the few current players to be capped at sevens and XVs, Sailasa Vunivesilevu, gave the artillerymen hope with a try before the break, however.

But further scores, including an effort from Rusiate Waqa, helped the Infantry to a 31-7 victory and its first-ever Army Inter-Corps title.
