Royal Navy women score twice to shock Royal Air Force at Wakefield Trinity

The RAF face the Royal Navy in the second week of the Inter Services rugby league championships

The Royal Navy women's rugby league team have beaten the Royal Air Force 0-8 in the second week of the Inter Services at the DIY Kitchens Stadium, home of Wakefield Trinity.

Two tries from a much-improved Senior Service side was enough to hold off their light blue rivals in what was an incredibly tight game, as the RAF walked away tryless in their first game at the Inter Services.

The Navy arrived in Wakefield looking to improve on their 8-34 loss to the British Army in Portsmouth, whilst the RAF will have wanted to set themselves up for a fight against the Army at Hull Kingston Rovers.

But it was a game of two halves in the first 40 minutes of the game, with neither team being able to find a way through to get their game up and going.

The RAF's Jodie Rawlinson managed to force her way over the line, but the Navy's last-ditch defence held up the light blues from getting onto the scoreboard.

With the clock ticking down to half time, the Navy began to dominate ball possession and pushed the RAF into their 20.

But it would be Libby Fox who would finally break the deadlock and score the opening try after barraging her way through the light blue defence.

With not much to pick apart from the two teams, the Navy led 0-4 at half time.

Both teams returned in the second half with better flow with the ball, but there was still not a lot separating either side.

The Navy carried the ball into the RAF's twenty and a loose ball was picked up by Navy centre Abigail Ashby, who had the legs to follow up with a second try for the Senior Service, building their lead to 0-8.

The RAF needed a breakthrough in the dying minutes of the second half, and after doing the hard work to push the Navy into their 20, RAF second row Dina Grey had her attempt at a try held up by a strong Navy defence.

As the referee's whistle confirmed full time, the Navy were jubilant in their celebrations as their two tries were enough to give them the win over the team in light blue.

The RAF will carry a loss into their game against the British Army at Hull Kingston Rovers on 28 September, where the women's Inter Services title will be decided.
