Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has joined rugby legends in sending good luck wishes to the UK Armed Forces rugby team as the International Defence Rugby Competition (IDRC) gets under way in Brittany, France.

Posting on his X account, formerly Twitter, the Labour leader said: "Good luck to @UKAFRugby as the World Military Rugby Championship kicks off in Brittany today.

"I know you will make our country proud."

His post comes after the UK team received shoutouts from rugby legends ahead of their opening game against Tonga on Saturday 16 August.

Recorded good luck messages have come from recognisable faces including former Welsh international Shane Williams, Leeds Rhinos legend Kevin Sinfield and Rugby World Cup winner Jason Robinson.

Every match featuring the UK team will be shown live on the Forces News YouTube channel and catch up will be available on each match through BFBS TV (for serving personnel only).
