Show of strength: Army pushed all the way at Inter Services Weightlifting Championships

The Army have won the first Inter Services title since weightlifting was recognised as an official Forces sport.

With a large number of participants and previous wins in this competition, the Army were considered heavy favourites.

However, an improved showing from the Navy and the RAF saw them pushed right to the limit at RAF Cosford.

Wins from Corporal Shane Caswell (lightweight men) and Charlotte Davies (heavyweight women) in their respective categories meant the Army were in a strong position.

RAF captain Corporal Michael Cutler managed to win the heavyweight men's group but it wasn't enough.

A better team score overall meant the Army won the title but Cpl Cutler thinks there is plenty of positives to take for the Air Force.

"We might have lost by 1,000 points last time, but this time, it's roughly around 300 points from the looks of it," he said.

"We're developing a good strong lower foundation and bringing it up which is our aim this year.

"Going into next year, we've already set our schedule out so we're looking to include novices."
