The Winners: Best of Royal Navy sport honoured at annual Sports Awards at Lord's

Royal Navy boxing star Leading Physical Trainer Sophie Colebourn has won Sportswoman of the Year for the second time in her career at the 2023 Royal Navy Sports Awards.

LPT Colebourn last won Sportswoman of the Year in 2021 going on to deliver an astonishing performance at this year's National Amateur Boxing Championships, where she won the 66kg category.

She was named as the winner amid a tight category, which included athletics star Lieutenant Chelsea Baker and gymnast Lieutenant Dannielle Tatton.

The Winners

Sportsman of the Year went to rifle shooter Sub-Lieutenant Theo Dodds, who has achieved international recognition in full-bore, small-bore and pistol shooting. 

SLt Dodds' win is a further step up from when he won Young Sportsperson of the Year in 2021 and was selected ahead of angler Leading Hand Robert Allen and hang and paraglider Colour Sergeant Grant Oseland of the Royal Marines. 

Team of the Year was awarded to the Royal Navy's women's golf team, who won their first Inter Services title in 11 years at the delayed 2022 championships, joining the men for a unique double.

Young Sportsperson of the Year went to footballer, Air Engineering Technician Jack Wright, who helped the Navy U23s to the Inter Services title before rising to the senior teams for the Navy and UK Armed Forces.

Also from football is Lieutenant Commander Chris James, who was named Coach of the Year for coaching the Navy U23s to the Inter-Services title and has now taken on the coaching role for the Navy Seniors.

Sports Official of the Year was awarded to Sergeant Phil Barnes of the Royal Marines for his services to clay target shooting.

The winners will now join those from the Army and RAF Sports Awards at the UKAF Sports Awards in London in April.
