Exciting footage released from the deck of the USS Dwight D Eisenhower aircraft carrier shows F/A-18 Super Hornets taking off into the night.

Released on social media by Captain Chris "Chowdah" Hill, the captain of the nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, the footage shows the jets blasting off into the dark.

Each plane is filmed stationary on the ship's deck before being launched into the air via the carrier's steam catapults.

The night sky perfectly captures the brightness of the aircraft's powerful thrust.

F/A-18 Super Hornets can reach speeds of mach 1.6 and have a range of 2,361km.

In 2022, the aircraft were used in the Tom Cruise film Top Gun: Maverick.
