Defence giant: Ukraine shows UK needs right structure with industries to combat threats

Watch: What can Ukraine teach UK industries about combating future threats?

The Ukraine conflict shows that the UK needs to have the right structure in place to work with industries to face modern threats, a leading defence company has said.

Defence industry giant KBR, which has been providing support to the British Army for more than a decade, will now be working with the UK to support Ukraine and says lessons can be learned on how to incorporate defence and industry in times of war.

"The UK industry and UK MOD have had as much, if not more, to learn from the Ukrainians in that exchange and, likewise, British industry has a huge amount it can provide to support the effort," said the head of policy and public affairs for KBR, Hugo Rosemont.

He said: "This war is teaching us and is a lesson for UK defence, as well, that we must have the appropriate structures within the Ministry of Defence and the frontline commands to engage industry in the round and ensure that UK defence has got the capability, both digitally and conventional, to ensure that we're resilient when we confront these threats in the future.

"Lessons can be learned from Ukrainians in terms of how technology capabilities can be applied on the battlefield.

"This is not a one-way street."

In Ukraine, Kyiv has militarised its industry sector to support its armed forces and if the UK was ever confronted by a similar threat, it would be vital for MOD to do the same with British industrial partners.

Russia has also militarised its industries to support the conflict and, despite heavy economic sanctions, Putin is still able to wage war effectively.

Lessons can be learnt from Ukraine in terms of how equipment can be used firsthand, but also how to mobilise industry and the armed forces to combat threats effectively.
