A clean-up operation is underway at a National Guard aviation support facility containing a number of helicopters after 800 gallons (more than 3,500 litres) of chemical foam was inadvertently released.

The concentrated aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) was accidentally released at the aviation support facility after a malfunction of the fire suppression system.

Vermont National Guard Colonel Jacob Roy told reporters work had started to contain the spill and remove the foam from all affected areas.

National Guard staff worked alongside various local agencies to manage and contain the spill.

With efforts to clean the facility ongoing, access to the building was restricted to personnel involved in the clean-up operation.

Reports say the facility is to resume normal activities shortly.
