President-elect Donald Trump has criticised the decision to let Ukraine use US missiles to strike targets deep inside Russia, calling it "crazy".

In an interview with Time magazine, in which he was named Person of the Year for the second time, he suggested he would alter US policy towards Ukraine.

"It's crazy what's taking place. It's crazy," he said.

"I disagree very vehemently with sending missiles hundreds of miles into Russia.

"Why are we doing that? We're just escalating this war and making it worse. That should not have been allowed to be done."

His comments come as the US Department of Defence announced a new package of support for Ukraine.

It marked President Joe Biden's 72nd package of equipment to be sent to Ukraine, from US stocks, since August 2021.

Estimated to be worth $500m, the US equipment will provide Ukraine with additional capabilities to meet its most urgent needs, which include air defence capabilities, munitions for rocket systems and artillery, and anti-tank weapons.

Specifically, the US will be sending Himars as well as 155mm and 105mm artillery ammunition, Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) and High-speed Anti-radiation missiles (HARMs).

It will also include chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) protective equipment, Javelin and AT-4 anti-armour systems, and tube-launched, optically guided, wire-tracked (TOW) missiles.

As part of the package, the US said it would continue to work with the 50 allies and partners through the Ukraine Defence Contact Group.
