Carrier Strike Group refuels by sea and by air as deployment continues towards Japan

The RAF's F-35B jets fly over the Pacific Ocean to link up for air-to-air refuelling

As the CGS25 heads towards Japan through the Indo-Pacific, the mission continues to demonstrate a range of skills.

The RAF's F-35B Lightning fighter jets have been filmed carrying out air-to-air refuelling over the clear blue waters of the Pacific Ocean, integrating with the UK's Voyager tanker aircraft.

The mid-air manoeuvre was conducted as part of Operation Hightower.

Also as part of the CSG25 mission, the Royal Navy's flagship aircraft carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, took on fuel and supplies in spectacular style, flanked by the tanker RFA Tidespring on one side and the US Navy's USNS Wally Schirra on the other.

F-35B Lightning jets and helicopters continued operating from the flight deck throughout the replenishment process.

"Sustaining any ship at sea is critical in maintaining operational tempo, reach and readiness without relying on port infrastructure," said Commander Mathew Gee, Group Logistics Commander of the CSG25.

It was the first time the carrier had been refuelled by two ships simultaneously.

"For HMS Prince of Wales to conduct a simultaneous replenishment, with both UK and USA support ships, highlights the operational flexibility of the Queen Elizabeth-class and strength of our alliances.

"Seamless replenishment of fuel, food, and ammunition like this demonstrates the power and importance of logistics."

In the air, a Merlin Mk2 helicopter, operated by 814 NAS, watched on as RFA Tidespring carried out the replenishment process for HMS Prince of Wales.

The MOD says this operation demonstrated seamless allied logistics and maritime interoperability.

The eight-month CSG25 mission – also known as Operation Highmast – has seen the task group led by HMS Prince of Wales pass through the Mediterranean, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean.

The aim is to reaffirm the UK's commitment to the security of the Mediterranean and Indo-Pacific region by partnering with regional allies.

More than 4,500 British military personnel are involved with the deployment, including around 600 RAF and 900 soldiers alongside 2,500 Royal Navy sailors and Royal Marines.

With 100 days already completed, CSG25 is now shifting its focus to Asia.

The next scheduled port stop is Tokyo at the end of August.
