Watch: Greek vessel defends cargo ship from multiple Houthi attack drones

Watch: Greek naval vessel defends a cargo ship from Houthi drone attack in the Red Sea

A Greek warship has thwarted a Houthi attack on a cargo vessel by shooting down two drones and forcing another two to veer away and abandon the attack.

Hydra-class frigate HS Psara is deployed to the region to protect cargo shipping passing through the Gulf of Aden, working alongside Dutch naval personnel and vessels.

Dutch Commander George Pastoor, who was on board the Greek ship during the incident, said: "This attack shows that it is still very unsafe for shipping in this region."

The European Union's Naval Force said: "HS Psara, while providing close protection to a merchant vessel, engaged four UAVs which were posing a significant threat to the freedom of navigation.

"As a result, two UAVs were downed, while the rest of them changed their course.

"The action was effective in avoiding any damage to seafarers and merchant shipping while the frigate continues her mission.

"This operation aims to protect the lives of seafarers, ensure global trade, protect global common goods, uphold freedom of navigation and contribute to regional peace and security."

Footage of the attack was released showing a low-flying Houthi drone moving across the water towards its target.

The Greek vessel intercepted the aircraft, sending it crashing into the sea.

This is the latest attack captured on film from the Red Sea area, only days after the Transworld Navigator merchant vessel was damaged in a Houthi attack.

The Dutch ministry of defence said: "Houthi units in Yemen pose a threat with, among other things, various types of drones such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

"The Houthis use these for reconnaissance and attacks on military bases, critical infrastructure and shipping in the region.

"The drones are difficult to detect and intercept.

"As a result, Houthis are able to inflict significant damage with limited resources."
