A mere 90 minutes is how long it took the 12-year-old son of a soldier to draw a realistic portrait of Captain Sir Tom Moore, the British Army veteran knighted in July for his incredible fundraising for the NHS.

Connor Lambert, whose dad is a Sergeant in the Army, has been drawing pictures since he was three-years-old, including a picture of a soldier for his Grandad. Talking about why he loves to draw, Connor said:

“I just love it because it is calming and it is my favourite thing to do.”

During the COVID-19 lockdown, Captain Tom raised nearly £33 million for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his Bedfordshire garden - smashing his original target of just £1,000.

The young artist from Grateley in Hampshire chose to honour Captain Tom's outstanding achievement by drawing him and had completed it with an hour and a half.

His favourite things to draw are portraits of people, whether they are famous or his friends, so drawing Captain Sir Tom was not an unusual thing for Connor to spend his time doing on a Friday afternoon.

Except, the Friday in question happened to be May 8, Victory In Europe Day, when the country was remembering the liberation of Europe from Nazi Germany by Allied Forces in 1945. Connor explained that it formed part of the inspiration for the drawing. He said:

“Captain Tom served the country, so I thought he would be a good thing to draw since it was VE Day.”

Connor’s mum Emma, a graduate of the BFBS Academy's Social Media Spouses course, shared the drawing on Facebook and, unsurprisingly, it quickly attracted attention.

He has since had a huge increase of interest in his artwork on social media and suggestions of art schools to apply to when he is older, to help him fulfill his ambitions to be an artist.
