Baltic Sentry: Nato's operation to protect undersea infrastructure from attack
Nato warships are increasing patrols in the Baltic Sea following a series of suspected attacks on undersea cables.
Led by the Royal Netherlands Navy, the operation - codenamed Baltic Sentry - is focused on the 73-mile-long Oresund Strait, which separates Denmark and Sweden.
The strait is one of four key waterways linking the Atlantic Ocean and the Baltic Sea.
The patrol is being carried out by Standing Nato Mine Countermeasures Group One.
But instead of hunting for mines, the warships are using powerful sensors and submarine drones to monitor undersea infrastructure and track passing vessels for any suspicious activity.
The HNLMS Schiedam is among the ships deployed in the region, with her crew monitoring vessels and inspecting underwater structures for signs of any damage.
Nato's wider operation also includes support from maritime patrol aircraft, drones and satellites, providing a broad surveillance network across the Baltic.
