2 YORKS Ready For Afghanistan

500 members of 2 YORKS have been preparing for their upcoming deployment to Afghanistan.

The Catterick-based battalion will take over the role of the Kabul Protection Unit which is responsible for providing force protection to all NATO allies and mentors currently working to support the Afghan government and their security forces.

Formerly a pure infantry battalion, 2 YORKS have now become a light mechanised force.

In Afghanistan they will be using the foxhound to taxi mentors between police stations, army bases and government buildings, and of course provide protection if required.

This will be the first time 2 YORKS have been deployed since they were rerolled and the first opportunity to put new skills to the test.

It’s been a steep learning curve for the infantrymen but the battalion have embraced the change. The first rotation of 250 soldiers will head to Kabul in August and will, by then, be fully prepared for an important deployment.
