Hundreds Of Cyprus Schoolchildren Awarded Special 'Golden Mention'

More than 500 schoolchildren at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus have been awarded a 'golden mention' certificate while learning at home.

Like in the UK, schools across British Forces Cyprus have been closed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Normally every Friday, a child at Akrotiri Primary School is selected for a golden mention and it is presented to them during assembly.

But the school's head teacher Ben Turner and a number of other teachers made sure they did not miss out.

The teachers went around the base, hand-delivering hundreds of the awards, all while observing two-metre social distancing rules.

Rebecca Chambers Freeborn, who's sons Luke and Toby received golden mention certificates, said: "What a wonderful thing for Akrotiri Primary School to do.

"We have two very happy boys and it is the boost they needed from their first full week of homeschooling.

"What a great community we live in."
